New Units
There are numerous factors to consider when choosing a new hot water heater. The team at Breezin HVAC will help you select the unit that is right for your property and needs.
Primary considerations include:
· Size – Don’t buy a water heater bigger than you need, or you will be paying to heat water you don’t use! Size should be based on the number of occupants and their peak hour water demand – not on the size of the house. The peak hour demand or first-hour rating (FHR) is the measure of how much hot water the heater will deliver in an hour and is required by law to appear on the Energy Guide Label.
· Efficiency – The Energy Factor (EF) indicates the energy efficiency of a storage water heater; the higher the EF, the more efficient the water heater. For instance, gas water heaters have an EF between 0.50 and 0.60, with some high efficiency models achieving as much as 0.80. When buying a new water heater, make sure to check the energy efficiency rating shown on the Energy Guide label and look for one with at least 1.5 inches of foam insulation.
· Cost – Often the least expensive water heaters are the most expensive to operate. A high efficiency water heater may cost a little more, but reduced operating costs will more than make up for the higher quality. Check the Energy Guide label to help choose an energy thrifty heater.
Tankless hot water heaters
Tankless water heaters also called instantaneous, continuous flow, inline, flash, on-demand or instant-on water heaters are also available and gaining in popularity. These water heaters instantly heat water as it flows through the device, and do not retain any water internally except for what is in the heat exchanger coil.

Example: Tankless hot water heater
How tankless hot water heaters work Tankless water heaters, which use high-powered burners to quickly heat water as it runs through a heat exchanger, were 22 % more energy efficient on average than the gas-fired storage-tank models in our tests. That translates into a savings of around $70 to $80 per year, based on 2008 national energy costs. But, because they cost much more than storage water heaters, it can take up to 22 years to break even—longer than the 20-year life of many models.
